Say Better: How to Have a Better Relationship with Social Media
Look around you. Everyone’s shouting at each other, trolling each other, complaining about algorithms and declining reach. Social media has become a swamp of deep fakes and outright lies, which users happily share within their echo chambers.
And we’re suffering. Our desire for attention and validation has grown, and our mental health has declined.
Our kids are suffering. 10 year old beauty influencers have hundreds of thousands of followers and young people are actively trying to deal with addictive devices we gave them. This webinar is about what we do next.
In this 90-minute session, you'll discover:
The worrying trends in human behaviour linked to social media platforms
The psychology behind why we argue online, and what to do about it
The impact of algorithms on our heads and hearts
How to change your relationship with social media to control it, versus letting it control you
Say Better Webinars
Communication is broken. No one’s listening to each other. We’re running away from uncomfortable conversations. Meaningful interactions have been replaced with computer screens. At Good Shout, we’re determined to fix it.
The Say Better webinars are a series of challenging interactive sessions designed to get everybody talking with more curiosity and empathy; and making a positive impact with our words. Come and be a part of the communications reset that society needs.
Say Better: How to Stop Waffling
Are you worried you lack impact in meetings? Find yourself waffling, going on too long or off at a tangent? Do you circle your point without ever seeming to get there? Completely baffled by why you’re doing it or how to stop? Think it’s just a ‘you’ thing that can’t be fixed? Think again.
This session from journalist and broadcaster Morag Cuddeford-Jones will help you nail down your thoughts, cut the waffle and the jargon and let you say what you really mean, all killer – no filler. In 90 minutes, you’ll learn
What waffle is and why we do it
Why resorting to jargon makes it worse
How to get rid of your waffle and make your point land first time, every time.
Say Better: The History of Swearing (and why it Matters)
The history of profanity, what it reveals about our values, and how ‘bad’ language can reflect what's important now.
You might think you know everything there is to know about swearing. But the words that shock, excite, and offend us are commonly used and wildly underappreciated. Swearing can improve our health, punch up our points, and help us seem genuinely trustworthy. Or it can offend, damage our credibility, and have expensive social costs. Profanity is an almost universal form of language that we’re rarely taught to leverage for its full potential. This webinar with writer and Good Shout facilitator Na’Imah Laurent-Dixon explores what our favourite swear words reveal about our cultural values, how swearing well can help you to say it better, and what pitfalls to avoid if you want to curse without ruining your relationships or your career. In 90 bloody brilliant minutes, we’ll cover:
The history of swearing and of our most-beloved swear words.
What swear words tell us about our cultural values.
How you can swear in ways that make you a better communicator, conversationalist, and powerhouse of persuasion.

This 4-week course is an intense and rewarding experience to bring senior women out of their comfort zone and helps them get louder, clearer and more impactful.

Say Better: What Men Can Do (for women)
Speaking up, shutting up, and why we need better conversations about gender.
There’s a difference between listening and waiting to speak. There’s also a difference between speaking up and talking over. And when it comes to supporting women, there’s a difference between standing up and lifting up. The socialisation of the genders means that we’ve been primed to communicate in fundamentally different ways, but that doesn’t mean we can’t fix it.
Good Shout's Gav Owen is a man, and he's designed this session is for other men who genuinely want to get it right, but aren't always sure what "right" looks like. This session offers a practical, honest conversation about tackling everyday misogyny, the moments that matter, and what it actually sounds (and feels) like when men listen brilliantly. In 90 minutes, we'll cover:
What genuine listening feels like, and why it's harder than it sounds.
Why so many men opt out of conversations about gender, and why that's a problem.
How to spot and challenge everyday misogyny without making it about you.
Springboards for better conversations around gender
Say Better: How to Talk to Strangers
Combating the rise of loneliness and embracing the brilliant awkwardness of everyday life
Being human is messy and full of contradictions. Take our relationships with strangers, for example. Conversations with strangers can be awkward!! We dislike wondering what to say next, dread prolonged silence, and think about how we can exit a conversation before it has even begun. Yet our connection to strangers is almost as important as drinking water.
We’ve all heard the advice: “Don’t speak to strangers.” It’s used to keep us and the people we love safe, which of course is important. But alongside the stories of strangers being shitty, there are lovely stories too. Moments that make our days better. A door being held open, a shared laugh, random words of wisdom that we still remember years on.
With rising reports of loneliness and feelings of disconnect, Good Shout's Aziza O'Beirne wondered: Are there long-term benefits to these (sometimes) awkward conversations with strangers? (Yes, there is.) This webinar will help you get these benefits and will have you thinking differently about your everyday conversations by exploring:
Are we awkward by design? What society and communities around the world teach us about social connection.
The surprising research and science behind conversations with stranger
Our assumptions VS realities of belonging
Experimenting with talking to strangers and how strangers can teach us more about ourselves
Say Better: How to Be Weird
The science of strangeness, and why it’s key to a happier and more creative life.
All of us are weird. It's just that some of us are better at hiding it than others. And Good Shout CEO Amy Kean has a hypothesis: the weirder we each allow ourselves to be, the happier and more creative we'll be as a result. But it's not easy defying norms in a society that wants us to be so very, very bland. This webinar will convince you that weird is the way forward, and show you how to use your weirdness more in everyday life. We'll cover:
The history of weirdness and why that matters
The biggest and best thinkers in this space
The relationship between weirdness and creativity
How you can use your own brand of strangeness to stand out in the best possible way
